Gratitude isn’t just words. The Oxford Dictionary defines gratitude as the “the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.” I am grateful to the members of ACOMS, many of whom have become my lifelong friends. I joined ACOMS as a resident member. At my first meeting I was immediately struck by the group’s collegiality and loyalty. Little did I know at the time that nearly 15 years later I would be on the board as the District VI Regent and your editor in chief. Nor did I appreciate how hard your board works to ensure the enduring success of this group.
As an example, we met in Savannah a few weeks ago to assess the location for a possible conference site. We had a robust and healthy discussion regarding ACOMS and what it personally means to each of us. Resoundingly, it was about intimate educational forums, camaraderie and networking with colleagues whilst simultaneously going to places that will allow for some fun and adventure. Our goal is to ensure ACOMS members can get the most out of the time away from their offices in a healthy combination of education both in and out of the lecture hall. Please keep a look out for our conference announcements. We have some fabulous destinations picked out!

The ACOMS Board of Directors and Executive Director
As professionals, we acknowledge that gratitude comes in both verbal and written affirmations. Think of patient evaluations, feedback, and online reviews of us. Conversely, taking the time to memorize a fact about someone, performing an act of service for them, or doing something without being told, is as wonderful as being told “thank you.”
In that light, I also want to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank Dr. Alan Fielding for graciously stepping up to the plate and assuming the presidency leadership early. He has done a remarkable job filling in for Dr. Suzanne McCormick and as his tenure comes to an end early next year, I know we are all grateful for his efforts in making the organization stronger. I would also like to thank all the wonderful contributors to ACOMS Review this year for sharing their inspiring stories, and for my co-editors, Dr. Lauren Basile and Dr. Robin Gallardi for helping us find them.
On a somber note, as a profession we have lost Dr. Ramon Ruiz. who leaves behind his wife of more than 30 years and three daughters. Dr. Ramon Ruiz was a member of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the ninth president of the American Academy of Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons. His passion, compassion and empathy are what made him a gifted leader and our dear friend. He was a humble man but an inspiration to many. He leaves behind a void that will be difficult to fill. I am grateful for having known such a remarkable individual.
There are currently thousands of individuals experiencing loss or displacement of loved ones as our world implodes through conflict and natural disasters. As the holiday season approaches, let us all take the time to appreciate how lucky we are and to express gratitude for loved ones, friends and family. To find comfort in the actions that say “thank you. I appreciate you.” Thank you for taking the time to read this and being a valued member of ACOMS!
Sincerely,
