The 2019 W. Harry Archer Award recipient is Felice O’Ryan, DDS, Kaiser Permanente, Oakland, California.

The W. Harry Archer Award was established by the Board of Regents of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (ACOMS) to recognize the achievements of individual oral and maxillofacial surgeons and to memorialize Dr. Archer’s significant contributions to the specialty. A prolific writer and gifted teacher, Dr. Archer was a trailblazer of oral and maxillofacial surgery. His excellence in leadership, teaching, research, and writing places him among the giants of our specialty.

Dr. O’Ryan is the first woman to receive this honor solely in her name. Over the course of her career, she has served as the Surgical Director of the Center for the Correction of Dentofacial Deformities at St. Lukes Hospital in San Francisco and the Program Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Highland General Hospital in Oakland. In 1989, Dr. O’Ryan was a Co-Founding Editor of Selected Readings in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (SROMS). She was also one of the first women to serve as an examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) in 1991, opening the door for subsequent women to follow. For eleven years, she served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (JOMS), before taking her current post as Section Editor of Clinical Controversies.

Dr. O’Ryan’s extensive research and professional experience earned her the honor of the 2008 Arnold K. Maislen Award for her significant contributions to the specialty, as well as the 2009 Daniel M. Laskin Award for Outstanding Article in JOMS.

Dr. O’Ryan attended dental school at the University of the Pacific and completed her oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. She currently runs a hospital-based practice specializing in orthognathic surgery at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Oakland, California. She is also an adjunct faculty member at University of the Pacific/Highland Hospital, where she works with oral and maxillofacial surgery residents in their third and fourth year rotations.

Dr. O’Ryan will present the Kurt H. Thoma Lecture, Esthetic Considerations in Orthognathic Surgery, at the ACOMS 40th Annual Scientific Conference & Exhibition April 7-9, 2019 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Learn more about the conference at
