ACOMS Review

President’s Message — Life Outside OMS Matters

Dear ACOMS Members:

Running started as a way to stay fit. But over time, it became something more — a space to reflect and reset. In the rhythm of each stride, I found clarity. In the quiet moments after a long day, I found presence. And in the discipline of showing up, I found a better version of myself.

As oral and maxillofacial surgeons, we are trained to be precise and focused. But those qualities don’t just come from clinical experience — they’re shaped by what we do outside the OR. For me, running and travel have been essential outlets. They’ve helped me stay grounded, avoid burnout, and return to my work with renewed energy and perspective.

This issue’s theme, “life outside OMS,” is a reminder that our personal passions are not separate from our professional lives — they enrich them. Whether you’re a resident just starting out or a seasoned colleague navigating a demanding schedule, I encourage you to be intentional about making time for what brings you joy. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.

That same spirit of balance and growth is reflected in our upcoming 2026 ACOMS Conference in Puerto Rico, themed “Innovation and Collaboration in Patient Care.” With a clinical focus on implants and related topics, the conference will bring together our community to share insights through the collaborative spirit that defines ACOMS.

Save the date and plan to join us in Puerto Rico. It promises to be a vibrant, forward-looking gathering — one that blends professional excellence with the kind of personal renewal we all need.

Until then, I hope you continue to nurture the parts of your life that exist outside OMS. They make us better surgeons and better people.

Warmly,

Rui Fernandes, MD, DMD, FACS, FRCS

President, ACOMS
