It is with deep sadness and regret that I inform you that two of ACOMS Past Presidents passed away within the last ten days. Philip Boyne and Lawrence (Larry) Denney were both well-loved and well-respected men. It has been a tough week for the College with the loss of both Phil and Larry. Please keep their families in your thoughts and prayers.

Philip Boyne
Philip Boyne, DMD, MS, DSc, Emeritus Professor Loma Linda University department of oral and maxillofacial surgery, passed away on the evening of June 9, 2008 after years of deteriorating health. Dr. Boyne was an extremely well-respected and renowned figure in the field, devoting his long career to repair, regeneration and reconstruction of the orofacial complex, with the knowledge gained applicable to treatment of disease and traumatic defects of the entire body. Dr. Boyne was a graduate of Colby College in Maine and received his DMD from Tufts University. From 1999 – 2001, Dr. Boyne was President of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Always dedicated to scholarship and focused on the importance of education, Dr. Boyne and his wife, Mary Anne, established scholarships at both Colby College and the Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Lawrence (Larry) Denney

Dr. Denney, born June 11, 1941 in Washington DC., was a graduate of Gonzaga High School, Georgetown University Dental School earning a D.D.S. degree, and the University of Health Sciences Antiqua School of Medicine earning his M.D. He became an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in 1972 and joined the Tri-County Oral Facial Surgeons in State College, PA, where he stayed until his retirement three years ago. Dr. Denney was the President of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons from 2001-2003, succeeding the late Dr. Philip Boyne. An avid hunter, Dr. Denney died suddenly while on safari in Africa on June 2. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ACOMS Foundation. Contact admin@acoms.org for more information.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 4404 Wisconsin Ave., NW, Washington, DC on Saturday, June 14, 2008 at 11 a.m. Family will receive friends at the Church beginning at 10 a.m.
