ACOMS Mission
Purpose
Fellows of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are individuals certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with full diplomate status.
Goals
The diplomates have joined together in the College for the purpose of enhancing the level of patient care. This enhancement of surgical care through the furthering of research and education in OMS surgery is achieved by the College’s sponsoring of educational programs, research activities, and fellowships as a service to not only the members of the College, but to the profession at large.
1. Responsibility to the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon Regarding Continuing Education
At the annual meeting of the College an effort is made to obtain speakers who are worldwide experts in various areas in addition to the discipline of oral and maxillofacial surgery itself. It is recognized by the College that we are a multi-disciplinary group and that input from other disciplines should not only by supported, but be regarded as essential to the full development of the health care we deliver. International networking of information and the support of international fellowships and seminars are part of this College activity.
Dissemination of information also will take the form of the sponsorship by the College of multiple types of media informational efforts accessible to the profession on a timely basis.
2. Responsibility to the Public
It is essential that the public be informed of the services provided by our specialty and of the efforts of the specialty to develop this multi-disciplinary approach to open lines of communication and to be responsive to the public’s needs and demands.
3. Responsibility to the OMS Trainee
The College also recognizes its responsibility to support the training of young oral and maxillofacial surgeons and their residency programming. The College supports research and the development of projects by residents throughout the United States by sponsoring research awards to residents and fellows in the OMS field. Additionally, fellowships in specialized areas are funded by the College. Such support is indicative of the College’s increased emphasis on the value of studies performed by housestaff, the relevance of research, and the professional discipline of publication in preparing young oral and maxillofacial surgeons to be able to increase the level of patient health care.
